B-52s @ Rolling Stones Private Concert to Benefit Robin Hood

Radio City Music Hall

New York, NY

March 14, 2006

This was the first time the Rolling Stones ever played Radio City Music Hall. It was one of those

rare opportunities to see the worlds best rock ‘n roll band in a concert hall built for music and not

an arena or stadium with crappy sound. My seat was a $1000 seat in the last row of the

orchestra under the overhang …. nothing doing there, the sound would have been awful. I

upgraded myself out in the open and into the $2,500 seats and wound up 6 rows FOB & DFC

(Front of Board & Directly Fucking Centered)!!! This recording was made from as sweet a spot

as the sweet spot offers. This was, as Mick notes, the most “well heeled” crowd the Stones have

ever played for, “even more so than Dubai, and you have more wives too.”. It was yuppie

central. Mix in alcohol and clappers were all over the place. Distressed though I may have been

of the yutz behind me who not only clapped the entire show, but he had no rhythm and was off

beat, you don’t really hear much of it. The guy next to me also started clapping during the 2nd ´

of the show. That’s when I started dancing more wildly, striking his arms to keep him from

clapping, he got the message after a few hard “accidental” bumps. An occasional hoot here and

there and clapping between songs, but all in all, this is amongst the best audience recordings I

have heard from this years tour. I know you are all going to love this recording.

Note as I was leaving and walking by the soundboard I asked the sound man for a copy of his set

list. He said “Here ya go mate!!!” I have attached a scan of it to this torrent for all of you.

Note also that Sheryl Crow was supposed to open the show, but obviously due to her recent

illness she had to cancel. Get well soon Sheryl, we all miss you and want to see you back on

stage. Instead, the always enjoyable party band the B-52′s filled in as the opening act.

Unfortunately I missed the first 45 seconds of their set, but I am including all of what I have of

their set as a part of this torrent.

Recorded by TaperAdvocat using Schoeps CCM4′s > Reutelhuber Box (“The Best Damn Box I

Ever Made” per Reutelhuber) > Sony PCM-M1 DAT

Played on Panasonic SV 4100 > Lynx One Card XLR Digital Input > Music Only Dedicated

Computer … Indexed with Sound Forge 4.5 & Burned to Mitsui Gold CD with CD Architect

Software using a Plextor SCSI Plexwriter 12/4/32 Burner.

Mitsui Gold CD Extracted to Internet Capable Computer with EAC > FLAC

Hope you all enjoy this recording as much as I do. Please let me know what you think. And

most importantly, share it freely with your loved ones and friends. And PLEASE donate to

May those who try to sell or otherwise profit from my recording be cursed with all the bad karma

that you justly deserve. This means you Middle Valley, VGP & all you other scum sucking

bootleggers who profit from my recordings. We will find you and we will put you out of

business.

notes from smores: It seems like this show was broadcast on the radio, but without the DJ banter, I can’t say for sure that it was taped from the radio. There is a pro shot video of this show that may be the source of the audio here, but I have no lineage to support its source for sure. There appear to be several bootleg discs of this as well. I have no idea what the true source of this show is. If you already have it, you probably don’t need this one. If you don’t have it, this one is pretty good.

This show is from the collection of Eddie7679 who was active taping and collecting 1984-1989. He was gracious enough to lend his collection to Smores who is working to get many of the old shows transferred and uploaded for others to enjoy. Some of these shows are completely uncirculated while some of the circulated ones are getting a fresh transfer from the master tapes.

PLEASE contact Smores on DIME if you have any SAXON, ROSE TATTOO, WILDHEARTS OR NINE INCH NAILS. Thanks.

This is a complete recording of one of the last shows from the 1st European leg of The

Delta Machine Tour. Almost all of the 37 concerts are documented by fans, so this

recording isn’t anything special. But it is special for me because I finally made my

record of Depeche Mode. Two previous shows in Lithuania (in 2001 at the same Vingis Park

and in 2006 at indoor venue) are documented by the other tapers.

The recording is more or less good. I was lucky enough to occupy probably one of

the best and safest recording spots available in a 30000 crowd – at the fence

of right echo control tower (see my photo used for the artwork). Though my position was

about 70 meters from the stage, I got a decent additional sound source from PA above my

head (mics) and extremely powerful bass attacks from a box built on the ground two meters

directly in front of me. This position almost omitted weather conditions which anyway were

perfect for an outdoor recording.

The biggest challenge at the postproduction was to reduce the annoying claps and screams

near me as much as possible. This dull work took almost a whole year. Also it was

necessary to calm the bass down.

——————————————————————————-

Thought I’d upload this one, as I don’t think it’s been on here for a while, and it’s 20 years since what turned out to be the last full concert of the Gilmour-era Pink Floyd.

I took my brother to this gig as a birthday surprise. I wasn’t that much of a fan, but he was. By the end of the first half, I was a convert. One of These Days, with giant inflatable pigs bouncing around right next to our balcony, On the Run with a flame-spitting plane crash right under our seats. Comfortably Numb… awesome.

We didn’t know at the time that it would be their last concert, I don’t even think I knew it was the last of the tour when I booked the tickets. But I’m glad I was there to see the end of an era.

Original info file follows. Thanks, as ever, to the original taper, editor, uploader. I’ll be enjoying this one again tonight.

Comments:

In November of 2001, our friend David Le Hunte (aka Massed Gadget) sent us a copy of this show from

what was then known as the best recording of this date. I spent some time cleaning it up

and, ultimately, improved its sound quality. Notably, ‘Speak To Me’ was over seven minutes long with about six

minutes being just the heartbeat…

Anyway, back to our story. While on the job, our pal Gonzo set out to find the best possible recording, and

over time uncovered the master that we’ve used for this release. It comes from a generous taper who wishes

only to be known as JCE (oooh, the mystery) to us. However, he has our deepest thanks and appreciation for

this rare find. To my ears, this is the finest audience recording of the 1994 European Tour.

Show Notes:

This show was indeed the “Last Bell” to date for Pink Floyd as a group, as this is the final 1994 show that

they performed, as well as the last full performance of Dark Side Of The Moon. The show was a benefit for

Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and others. The recording is an enjoyable listen from start to finish.

Technical Notes:

This is a powerful document that stands on its own, since it is possibly one of the best audience recordings

of the 1994 Division Bell Tour. The crowd was rather quiet that night, which contributed to a very decent

recording that boasts excellent quality throughout. There is nice mix and balance throughout. The only very

minor wart is the short tape flip during the early lead-in to ‘Sorrow’; other than that, the show is complete.

Taper’s Comments:

This was the last of 14 nights that the Floyd performed at Earls Court, London, and the final night of the

Division Bell tour–and as of today, the last time that Pink Floyd played live. During the run of the shows,

the metal heads from the Division Bell album and CD cover were on the top of the entrance overhang at the

front of Earls Court, so as you came out of the tube station, they just loomed above you–they were huge!

The stone heads from the cassette cover, equally huge, were inside the foyer just behind one of the VW Golf

Pink Floyd cars that had been produced–I guess it was one of the 30 Golfs that were imported into the UK.

I had got a ticket for this night because my ticket for the second night (13/10/94) was in Stand 8 which had

collapsed on the opening night of the Earls Court shows (12/10/94). The two stands that collapsed weren’t

replaced until the 17th I think, which was the rescheduled date for the show cancelled on the 12th. I couldn’t

make that night–had to be back at work–but I was given a full refund AND a ticket exchange. The only show

for which they had tickets left was for the last night, and I jumped at the chance. So this was a free show for

me ;-)

The show was recorded on my old Aiwa personal stereo with an Aiwa mic that came with it. It was the one that I

used for quite a few of the ’94 shows. The mic was a small stereo mic, which was clipped to the peak of a Pink

Floyd tour baseball cap. My seat was about midway back on the right hand side, on the first block that rose

from the floor–Block 6.

Whereas most of the ’94 shows had the huge silver construction in the centre of the stadiums that included the

mixing desk and the glitter ball, at Earls Court that wasn’t there. The glitter ball was suspended from the

ceiling and was, in effect, upside down. When it came down and opened up, the effect was far better than at

any other venue that I saw the show. As during the Wall shows, the ceiling had loads of flags hanging

down–this time with the various head emblems that were on the artwork rather than the hammers. Apparently

they were there to help the sound!

For me, this was the best ’94 show that I saw, the performance of DSOTM was great, and the band seemed to

really enjoy the show. Dave also embellished on quite a few tunes–’Sorrow’, ‘Run Like Hell’ and ‘One Of

These Days’. There was a much lighter mood in the arena. The shows following the stand collapse had a tense

atmosphere, and the performances were very staid and workmanlike, whereas this seemed to be a very relaxed

performance.

Dave’s comment at the end was one that he used a few times: “We’ll see you again one of these days,” which

seemed true at the time as there were rumours of a European tour in ’95-like they had done in ’89 after the

MLOR World Tour. At the very end of the show, after the encore and during the applause, the three backing

singers appeared on stage dressed in cleaning maid outfits and brooms and swept Dave, Nick and Rick off the

stage.

On leaving the arena, all I really noticed was that three banks of four searchlights–one at each side of

Earls Court and one on the roof–were shining their very powerful lights into the clear London sky, as people

made bleating noises as we were herded down into the tube station. Enjoy the show! JCE, 30/01/03

Without these guys, none of this would have been possible.

The true thanks go not to me, but to the taping community behind whose footsteps

I have followed, including those who have perfected the art of stealth

recordings, the makers of the stealthy mikes, cords, adapters, and preamps, and

those who have graciously shared their recording techniques.

I am merely a mike stand with a credit card and driver’s license.

As always, I don’t care what you do with these files, once you download

them–they are yours now, except these files are not for sale, free

trade only. You can thank me by uploading something of a similar genre

or trading with me, so I can.

Regards,

Scooter
